Mientras preparaba con Manuel de Falla el concurso de Cante Jondo que se celebró en 1922 en Granada, Federico García Lorca escribió el corpus de “Poema del cante jondo”. Su pretensión inicial era publicar el libro coincidiendo con este certamen que deseaba combatir el «flamenquismo», fenómeno que para el compositor gaditano suponía la decadencia del género. Al final hubo de esperar hasta 1931, casi una década, para que viera la luz esta obra que busca la esencia del carácter andaluz. «Somos un pueblo triste, un pueblo estático», escribió Lorca, que encuentra las raíces del cante jondo en el mundo gitano, que para él es un puente de unión entre su tierra y el atávico «Oriente impenetrable». Raúl Arias ilustra esta edición fijada por Luis Alberto de Cuenca, donde se dan la mano el dolor y la pena, el amor y la muerte. Versos que son saetas, siguiriyas, soleás, poemas que transmiten la fuerza trágica del dolor, el llanto y la muerte.
